2009 Martinelli Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard

Jackass Vineyard was planted in the late 1800’s in the splendid Russian River Valley. This eight acre vineyard thrives on a steep rolling hillside which surrounds the west side of the Jackass Hill Vineyard. The old head pruned vines are farmed much the same way as they were a century ago; without the use of trellising, irrigation, or pesticides. The vines produce a large crop load for being 100 years old, about three tons per acre, and the fruit is thinned to insure more concentrated flavor in the berries.

The grapes tend to ripen unevenly, as typical of this mysterious varietal, and two or three separate harvests are usually the norm. The grapes are picked ripe, about 26 degrees brix, into small wooden boxes that Giuseppe Martinelli had made by hand a century ago. The ripeness at harvest allows the wine to wave its true Zinfandel character in flavor and color.

After picking, the whole berries undergo a long cool fermentation, with indigenous yeast, to generate skin contact and extract fruit character. The juice is gravity fed into small oak barrels with a touch of residual sugar remaining to complete the fermentation process in barrel until dry. It is then allowed to rest and mature in 100% new French oak on its gross lees for ten months before bottling. The grapes, juice, and then wine are minimally handled. The finished wine is unfined, unfiltered, neither cold nor heat stabilized and contain naturally occurring sediment. We recommend decanting or allowing the bottle to sit upright in a cool place prior to serving. Salute!

"The 2009 Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard emerges from a plot of 130-year-old head-trained vines. Plums, exotic spices, tar, minerals, forest floor and black cherries are some of the many notes that come to life in this powerful, explosive wine. Layers of fruit continue to build with notable intensity as the wine flows through to its intense, resonant finish. This is a dazzling wine from Martinelli, but patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.

Martinelli is one of the original pioneering families in Sonoma. I tasted a wide range of wines during a recent visit. The 2008 Syrahs, from a challenging vintage, are a bit up and down, but the rest of the wines are all outstanding. As always, these are fairly bold, extroverted wines, but their overall balance is typically superb." (Wine Advocate #199 Feb 2012     Antonio Galloni  Drink: 2019 - 2029)

"The 2008 Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard has on of those "wow" aromatic profiles. Although not saturated in color (it is dark plum/garnet), it boasts a huge nose of incense, camphor, smoked meats, herbs, forest floor and jammy strawberries as well as cherries. Its is a bull-bodied, dry, textured, classic old style, "packed and stacked" Zinfandel that, despite its lofty alcohol, is not the least bit hot. This is stunning stuff from one of the great historic sites of California. Drink it over the next 10-15+ years." - 94 points, Robert M. Parker, Jr. The Wine Advocate.
