SYRAH 2010 NAPA VALLEY from Hudson Vineyard has impressed us with its suave richness since it went to barrel after the fermentation. Antonio Galloni described it as "a huge wine with tons of depth to the fruit in a dark, brooding style. Game, ash, licorice and a host of other varietal aromas and flavors emerge from this extroverted, impeccable wine." Young Syrah vines can be exuberant and unruly, and of all the wines we make, vine age in Syrah is most critical. This 2.3 acre vineyard growing in volcanic soil rare in the Napa Carneros is over 25 years old now and has achieved the much-coveted old-vine status which provides the wine exceptional grace and power. We believe that the cool wind off the San Francisco Bay and the unusual mineral content of the soil combine to make this Syrah unique in the new world. 175 cases produced.

"The 2010 Syrah Hudson Vineyard is showing beautifully today. Black olives, plums, tobacco, violets, smoke, cured meats, incense and sage jump from the glass in this inky, deep Syrah. Firm tannins frame layers of opulent fruit. The 2010 is dark, masculine and brooding. It, too, will require quite a bit of patience. With time in the glass, the 2010 turns increasingly inward and massive. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028.
These wines from John Kongsgaard were among the highlights from the month I spent in Napa Valley this year. The overall quality level here is absolutely remarkable. It is rare to see someone who is so brilliant with so many grape varieties, but Kongsgaard seems to have the magic touch. The Chardonnays remain among the most exquisite in California. Kongsgaard favors longer elevage for his Chardonnays and is generally willing to take greater risks than most of his colleagues. No guts, no glory, as the saying goes. Well, there is plenty of glory here."
