This is a little more golden than its
Joy Road sibling but features the same
purity of flavor and focus. One of the
trademarks of this vineyard we've
discovered through the years is its
ability to produce weighty wines that
aren't heavy. We make the same comment
about the Summa Old Vines Pinot Noir
offering every year and so we partly
attribute this in the Thieriot to vine
age as well. Though this would never be
confused with a more heavy style of
California Chardonnay, it is a bit more
classic in character than the Joy Road
bottling. This is more about generosity
and features elements of brioche,
hazelnuts, smoke and marzipan
complemented by a bit of citrus zest.
This is already a broad, deep wine but I
imagine it will only continue to add
dimension as it ages. This is one of
those wines you debate selling wondering
if you'd be better served to hoard and
drink it all yourself.

One of the greatest young Chardonnays I’ve ever tasted certainly has to be the 2013 Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard, from the very old vineyard planted in 1990 with the Robert Young clone of Chardonnay. It was cropped at 1.5 tons of fruit per acre and aged in Louis Latour cooperage. This amazing wine shows notes of poached pear, honeysuckle and hints of white peach and pineapple, is stunningly rich and full-bodied, but has great acidity and a remarkable finish pH of 3.1, which is incredible, given the intensity and power of this Chardonnay. Look for it to age well for up to a decade or more.
This is the home project of Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Welsh, who started this boutique operation in 2002. In the last few years, they’ve expanded to include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. I tasted four Pinot Noirs from Rivers-Marie, all of them different and singular. I also had a look at two vintages of the four Cabernet Sauvignons that are made by Rivers-Marie. The 2013s are in bottle and are absolutely spectacular wines. The 2014s look strong, with up-front fruit, but exceptional density, purity and richness.
